Between Never and Maybe

12/13/95

Her thoughts return to one night,

He had said everything right.

She had just pushed him away,

Giving him "never" as her final say.

Over time he had always been there,

Never afraid to listen and care.

She had wandered far and near,

Always returning to his listening ear.

He met her friend and got engaged.

Ready to go gray with each other and old age.

She was to be part of the wedding day,

A bridesmaid, all smiling and gay.

Life goes on, and things changed,

The wedding plans were rearranged.

She tried to console and give hope.

He held on and tried not to mope.

Two years now since he said it right.

Two years since she gave him a fight.

"Between never and maybe," he said.

She smiled softly and nodded her head.
