A King's Highway?

8/17/95

Life's road stretches out far beyond her sight

Every time she turns her head, she sees another exit -

An attraction she can't deny.

She can't come back and take this road again.

There's no turning around to catch something she missed.

She exits, and then she's on another long stretch,

looking identical to the one she just left.

There are just as many exits here.

They are all one way.

She doesn't have a map to follow, only instinct.

The next exit appears in her sights.

She doesn't take this one.

She'll follow this road a bit longer -

Never knowing what exits are ahead, either.

She's doing the best she can.

There is no one in front of her, no one behind.

Sometimes she picks up people on the way.

They ride a bit, and then want an exit she doesn't.

She drops them off and looks over her shoulder

as they drift out of her sight forever.

Sometimes they talk, sometimes they ride in silence.

It never fails that she doesn't want to stop to let them out.

She wants to keep going down the road,

Always eager to find out what's coming up.

Always looking for the best exit she can find.

She's passed a couple that she never should have passed,

And taken some that she hadn't meant to.

Some tricked her with great invitations.

Some looked so tranquil, she missed them completely.

But "the" exit she has been looking for, she has never found.

She keeps going down the road,

Taking this exit or that one.

She talks to those she meets along the way,

Offering solace in the ride.

The ride that never ends.
